Privacy Policy
Drift is a browser extension that helps you become aware of time spent exploring topics online. Your privacy matters — here's exactly how Drift handles your data.
Our Core Commitment
Drift stores all data locally on your device. We do not collect, transmit, or share your browsing data with anyone — including ourselves. We have no servers, no analytics, and no tracking.
What Data Drift Accesses
To function, Drift accesses the following information, all of which stays on your device:
- Active tab URL and domain — used to determine which topic or domain you are currently browsing so Drift can categorize and accumulate time.
- Time spent per domain/topic — calculated locally and stored in your browser's local storage to track browsing duration patterns.
- Your preference settings — such as intervention thresholds and notification preferences, stored locally to personalize your experience.
Permissions and Why We Need Them
- Tabs — to detect the active tab's URL and domain for time-tracking categorization.
- Storage — to persist your time-tracking data, session history, and settings locally across browser sessions.
- Alarms — to run periodic background timers that update elapsed browsing time and trigger awareness check-ins.
- Notifications — to deliver gentle intervention nudges when you've spent significant time on a single topic.
- Host permissions — to read the current page's URL for domain-based categorization. No page content is read, modified, or transmitted.
What We Do Not Do
- We do not collect personally identifiable information.
- We do not read, store, or transmit page content.
- We do not use cookies or third-party tracking.
- We do not sell, share, or transfer any data to third parties.
- We do not use remote code — all functionality is bundled within the extension.
- We do not use your data for advertising, profiling, or creditworthiness purposes.
Data Storage and Retention
All data is stored locally on your device using the Chrome Storage API. You have full control over your data at all times. Uninstalling the Drift extension will permanently remove all stored data from your browser. You may also clear your data at any time through the extension's settings.
Third-Party Services
Drift does not integrate with or transmit data to any third-party services, APIs, or analytics platforms.
Children's Privacy
Drift does not knowingly collect any data from children under 13. Since Drift does not collect personal information from any user, no special provisions for children's data are necessary.
Changes to This Policy
If we update this privacy policy, the revised version will be posted on this page with an updated effective date. Continued use of the extension after changes constitutes acceptance of the revised policy.
